Preparation

Ingredients

  • 700 g Diced beef
  • 2 Onion
  • 2 Carrot
  • 2 cloves Garlic
  • 500 ml Ale
  • 300 ml Beef stock
  • 1 sheet Puff pastry
  • 1 Egg

Instructions

    Preheat the oven to 170°C.

    Heat oil in a heavy casserole dish and brown the beef in batches until deeply coloured.

    Remove the beef and cook chopped onions and carrots until softened.
  4. 4
    Add garlic and cook briefly before returning the beef to the pan.

    Pour in the ale and beef stock, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.

    Cover and simmer gently for around 90 minutes until the beef becomes tender and the sauce thickens.

    Transfer the filling into a pie dish and allow it to cool slightly.

    Top with puff pastry, trim the edges and brush with beaten egg.

    Bake for 30–35 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden brown.

    Serve with mashed potatoes or buttered greens.
